Back Squats x20

The New Back Squats
Week 1
20 reps at 60%
I went with 165#.

I went little on the lower side, but I am a little timid about a 20 rep program.  This is going to be a whole new back squat ball game, pushing my endurance and commitment.  The breathing alone on 20 squats is exhausting. :)

WOD
Baseline
500 m row
40 squats
30 sit ups
20 push ups
10 pull ups (GB)
time-6:18

When I get better at push ups, I will definitely be able to cut some time off of this one, as that is where I wasted A LOT of time.  Of course, my pull ups always need work, but I clearly need to work on getting more push ups in a set.  I was doing them in 5s.  Not good.

CrossFit Footballish Day

Bench Press
1RM-123#

And that was all I had in me today. I was hoping for 133, and I attempted that a couple of times. I just couldn't quite do it...

WOD
partnered with Angela

9-7-5-3
Deadlift 183#
Dead hang pull ups (with the green band)
1-2-3-4
Resisted Runs

Time-11:58

So that was hard. In fact I was getting just a little nauseous on those last resisted runs, and I could hardly wait to be done so I could just be on the ground, not moving.

It was a great workout though, once I was done with it and had recovered for about 15 minutes.

And guess what? I am tired now. Really tired actually.

2011 Goals

I need to really get on this...

I mean, really how can one CrossFit without setting your yearly goals?

One of my goals to make goals that make sense this year...

Some of my 2010 goals were just flat out nonsensical. Shall I amuse you with them now?

1. 400m run-sub 1:55 (yep, I'm that slow!)
**so I hate running so much that I never even attempted a timed 400 m run, over the course of one full year. That means 12 months without ever thinking to time a 400 m run.

2. 500m row-sub 1:50
**goal met
3. OHS-115#
**goal met

4. C&J-135#
**made it to 123#

5. Grace-as Rx'd
**goal met

6. Pull Ups-get 3 real ones
**I can do 3 kipping pull ups on 3 different attempts...

7. Helen-as Rx'd
**what?!?! 3 pull ups, yet still do Helen with 36 pull ups? That one made a TON of sense.

8. Push Ups-25 unbroken
**I don't think I can do this one, but I should see where I am.

9. snatch-103#
**nope, just made it to 93#

So now I have to think about new goals.
I have a long list so far:
1. 1 deadhang pull up
2. 5 consecutive double-unders (maybe I should make that 2!)
3. Snatch-103#
4. Clean and Jerk-138#
5. string together 20" box jumps, cycle them without resetting each time

Class
Skill
1 PPress+1 PJerk+ 1 Split Jerk (hold 5 sec.)
63, 73, 83, 88x2

WOD
4 rounds
20 ball slams 25#
10 pull ups (BB)
Time: 6:22

After doing the push press wod yesterday, we all just knew that we were destined to have lots of arm work tonight. It never fails...And then we get reprimanded for not checking the strength calendar, but there was no calendar.

I like ball slams. I almost never mind them since they are something I can do without thinking-just pick up the ball, slam it into the ground, repeat...but tonight my arms were complaining loudly during the whole last two rounds.

Oh, the joys of carb restriction

Just so you know, going back to good old carb restriction is pretty awful. I have gone back to under 60g carbs/day, after letting the carb intake creep up with fruit, sweet potatoes and a cheat here and there (things like Ben and Jerry's ice cream the night I got my 273# back squat. I loved it.) I really thought that it would be simple this time. I wasn't eating bread, pasta, rice... so it would be simple, right?

Well, today I feel like all I want to do is curl up into a ball and not move. I keep gritting my teeth. I have to make conscious effort to relax my jaw. The sound of someone else eating is enough to drive me over the edge. At times, the sound of my own blood pumping through my own head is torturous. Working out this morning took all the energy I had and after I was done I was shaky and dizzy. All I can do is drink water and plaster a smile on my face, hoping that when I wake up tomorrow everything will be all butterflies and roses.

I know this will pass. I know it will.

Thursday's Workout
Back Squat
I messed up the whole scheme, so it didn't work quite like it was supposed to:
203x5
213x5
238x2 then fail...

I was glad Kyle was there to pull the bar off.

WOD
7 rounds
7 DB push press 30#
7 burpees
7 pull ups (green band, deadhang)

Time-12:06

The presses were almost awesome. I looked forward to them in every round because both the burpees and deadhang pull ups were so, um...not awesome. I totally regressed on my burpee form, but for most of the wod, I didn't care.

Saturday's WOD
Snatch
53x2
63x1
73x1
83x2
93 fail, again...

Interval Cindy
2 min on, 30 sec off x5
2+5 pull ups, 10 push ups/2/2/2/2

Honest truth-once I realized that I wasn't going to get 3 rounds, ever, I just paced myself to make sure I got the full 2 rounds each interval. By round 3 I realized that I had to fly through the ring pull ups and squats to allow myself the extra time needed to complete the push ups. But even though they were hard, I felt pretty good about all my real, no knee push ups.

And I would rather do this with the ring pull ups over jumping pull ups any day. I truly, deeply, all the way to the core of my being, dislike jumping pull ups now.

Oh, and I owe great thanks to Golden for all that extra running he did to push me through the warm up run. I know you are too busy to even read blogs anymore, so you won't even see this, but without your help I wouldn't have made it. :) And my sister called me this afternoon to try to talk me into doing the Warrior Dash...agh.

The Paleo Challenge

The votes for Paleo 2.0 were counted and I won. :) I am so very appreciative of all the encouragement and support that so many people provided. It was a lot of work, but it was very, very worth it. You can read more about it at the link above.

Thursday

I worked more on my pull ups. :) They are HARD without a band!

WOD
5 rounds
5 pull ups (violet band)
5 box jumps 20"
Time: 3:22

The difference between how little work it took to do pull ups with the green band and how MUCH work it took to do them with the violet band was significant. But I remember when I could not do one with the green, or even when I could not do one with the blue, no matter how hard I tried!

And the box jumps-I was doing them all without resetting my feet on the floor, so I am inching closer to cycling those 20 inchers.

Sat
Chinese dumbbell rows 35# 3x10

WOD
5 rounds
10 DB snatch R. 30#
10 DB snatch L. 30#
10 Burpees
Time: 11:50

I love burpees. They are the best. I think I love them so much and have gotten so good at them that I probably don't even need to do them anymore. At least for a very long time. Right?!?

Happy Dance

Snatch
53x3
63x2
68x1
73x1
78x1
83x1
88 fail

Umph...I really wanted to get that 88 today.

WOD
4 rounds 2:30/90 sec rest
200 m run
7 box jumps 20"
max KBS 44#
19-15-15-14

And then pull up practice. I did it! I was totally shocked when it happened, but I got my first kipping pull up. Clearly there were several important pieces to today's success: my latte, the mocking of my hip snap, and the presence of the vuvuzela in the box. Now I just have to try to repeat it, but it more than made up for not getting the 88 on the snatch.

Finally, a FS PR!!

Skill
Front Squat 3, 3, 3, 3, 3
135x3
155x3
165x3
175x3
185x3 (PR)

The last time I failed at 180. I shared a rack with Cliff and that made me super nervous. I mean, come on, lifting with a certified level 1 trainer right next to you the whole time?!? And then to have not just Kyle, but also Cliff there to mock my horrible front squat bar position?!? It doesn't get much better than that people. :)

WOD
AMRAP in 12 min.
6 split squats 25# DB (6 each leg)
8 T2B (which as we all know weren't T2B for me, but I really surprised myself with how much closer I was to K2B...)
Rounds-8
Special thanks goes to Desmond for finding the missing 25# DB. I was so, so dejected when I could only find one and thought I would have to use the 20 pounders. I really appreciate that he took the time out of his super fast, no rest workout routine to find that thing.

Then multiple attempts at a kipping pull up. Not yet.
But get this-I found out that I actually have to PULL to make this work. I think that is my problem

Home Again and Back in the Gym

I was able to pull myself together and actually got through one hotel wod.
3 rounds
10 DB thrusters 25#
10 burpees
This was untimed, and I wish I could say it was really fast, but I can't. I think it took me somewhere in the 5 minute range. Whoot! Who doesn't love doing this in the middle of a hotel pool room/gym, especially when you just loooove sticking out like a sore thumb?!? I do appreciate Kyle taking the time to program this for me. His kindness knows no bounds.

And then back in the box this morning, yes a Thursday morning class! Happy me! :)

Skill
Back Squat, reset at 90%
193x5x5
This was absolutely perfect for this morning. The weight was just enough to feel like I was doing something good, but not so heavy that I had to really struggle with it. I wasn't up for struggling with the back squat, so this was perfect.

WOD
5 rounds
200 m run (Well, it was actually just to the fence, but that's because Joc told me to run just that far. I would never short a run!)
10 pull ups (green band)
10 ball slams 25#
Time: 12:30

I can't really say this was absolutely perfect. But all things considered it was a really good wod to come back to-simple, things I need to work on, and exhausting. The 5th round was horrid. I even broke up the ball slams, and I don't like to break up ball slams. But I am glad that I just came back and died right away.

Then Kyle worked with me on the kip. No pull up yet, but it is closer!

Then I got to finish with 3x10 GHD sit ups.

Yep, it is super good to be back.

Paleo Challenge 2.0 Retest, part 1

I am thah-rilled right now.

Back Squat 1RM
263#

Previous 1RM on 1/19/2010 was 218#
Yep, that is a 45# PR, and I surpassed my goal of hitting 260.

Max Pull Ups
25 Green Band

Previously had 3 on 1/18/2010. I had been waffling between a goal of 10 or 12 pull ups. I hit 12 and knew I had 15. Then I just kept going.

I love seeing measurable progress!

My poor abs

My wod from Monday-
5 Rounds
100 m run
8 pull ups (green band)
Time: 6:50, I think

Then GHD sit ups 3x10

I am pretty sure that this is the largest number of green band pull-ups I have done at one time, and I wasn't moving very quickly through them. All my runs were really fast.

My abs are still nice and sore after just 30 GHD sit ups. I am pretty sure that I currently only have enough abdonimal muscle to just barely hold up my skeleton and nothing more. It is a wonder that I can even keep my torso upright. Clearly more GHDs would not be a bad thing...

Back Squat Make Ups

Warm Up
Pull Ups
3 violet band pull ups, all in a row

Back Squats
218x5
218x5
218x5
218x5
218x5

And that was it for me! 218 is my Jan 2010 1RM, and I can't wait to see what my new 1RM is now.

I missed back squat day on Monday because I was not feeling well. The germs came back. I am still unsure of just what course will need to be taken to get rid of this infection for good, but I am sure it will all be figured out soon. In the meantime, I am tired, and this set wasn't nearly as easy as last week. I was really glad to get this done though. Because here is a little secret about me-I just might be a little obsessive about CF now. I have a schedule and I don't like to have it messed up. And I worry about falling off the wagon, getting out of the habit of working out, and becoming horribly out of shape again.

Cindy

5-10-5 shuttle runs
Oh, it was super fun trying to keep up with everyone, particularly Kevin and Matt! I had some significant coordination issues that made it rather tough to make each turn. I think that must have come from actually trying to run fast. I can run OR do a 180 degree turn, but apparently combining them is still a challenge.

WOD
"Cindy"
AMRAP in 20 minutes
5 pull ups (blue band)
10 push ups
15 squats
Rounds: 14 +8 squats

Big time bummer that I spent just a few too many seconds laying on the floor, mentally struggling with the push ups.

Big time yeah that I actually completed that many push ups and pull ups. I think it is safe to say that 75 pull ups (all totally non-jumping, not even with any little pushes off the box) and 150 push ups is a big time PR for me. It was only a couple months ago that even getting 10 BB pull ups was a major accomplishment for me. Those pull ups felt easy tonight! The push ups weren't easy, at all.

Oh, and on the pull up front, last night I also got 3, yes people, 3 with the violet band. They were not all connected, but this was the first time I was actually able to repeat a violet band pull up.

Thursday, April 22, 2010

Skill
Jerk
93x1x3
98x1x2
103x2
112x1
118x1

Do you know that great feeling when you reach a PR? I love that. But then there is also the great feeling that comes when you realize you are on the way to actually working at that number. I love that feeling too.

WOD
4 rounds
200 m row
15 pull ups (blue band)
Time: 8:45

Probably could have suffered through the green band on this one. I wasn't sure about actually getting 60 done with the green, but since I was still able to get 10 at one time on round 4 with the blue, I should have moved up. Now I know.

Wednesday, March 24, 2010

Finally, Deadlifts!

Skill
Max Pull Ups x5
All with the green band 6/5/5/4/4
All done without any kip...that was tough.

WOD
5 rounds
2 min rounds
100 m run
5 heavy deadlifts 198#
Max box jumps 16" 11/8/12/10/9
Rest 90 sec after each round

The run was scaled down from a 200 m run so I had a chance to work on actually sprinting. I can't sprint for 200 m, but I can finally sort of, kind of sprint, or at least run quicker, for 100m. I was under strict orders to actually go fast, or I would get into trouble. I was happy with my sprints.

The deadlifts were another story. They were hard, but I knew they would be. Deadlifts have been nagging me lately as I started to realize that it had been weeks since I had last done them. I could tell tonight that it had been a long time, a whole month in fact.

Oh, and yet another sign that my life has changed. I actually walked into a store with my "I heart Kyle" t-shirt on after class. Just in case you didn't know, I was a strict "no printing whatsoever on a shirt" girl for years. What has this world come to?!?

I Do Know How to Stand Up...

even if it didn't look like it during this WOD.

Skill
1 1/4 squats 5x5
43, 53, 103, 113, 123

WOD
10, 8, 6, 4, 2
Walking lunges 70#
Pullups (Blue Band)
Time: 8:29

Mentally, this type of wod is almost wonderful. Things just look better and better every round. If you can finish the 10, you can finish the 8, and that 2 at the end just sounds delightfully simple. In reality, those last rounds of lunges were hard, hard, hard. There is something uniquely humbling about weighted lunges. It just shouldn't be so hard to do something as simple as standing up.

This is for you, Wesley-I did the wod with banded pull ups. :) That brings my pull up total for January to 88. I hope to be able to actually get more than 1 green band pull up at one time by the end of the month!
